Long-Range Property Planning Committee

LRPPC Purpose and Focus

Girl Scouts is commtted to ensuring all girls have access to life-changing experiences and exciting activities in a safe environment. The organization strives to provide each generation of girls with relevant, fun activities they will always remember.

Shortly after seven local councils merged in 2008, the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana Board of Directors formed a Long Range Property Planning Committee, comprised of geographically representative volunteers with relevant professional skills and who are passionate about their involvement in the Girl Scout Movement.

The members of the committee thoughtfully and diligently reviewed input from thousands of girls and adult volunteers, analyzed volumes of statistical data, conducted site visits to all 12 properties and consulted with experts. In a time of limited resources, this committee carefully reviewed the properties in our portfolio in order to recommend to the council’s board of directors plans on how to use them more wisely.

All 12 properties were aligned into one of three categories: 1) retain, 2) rest or 3) retire and sell or divest. Seven properties will be retained to enable the council to focus its resources wisely and build our council's camp pathway to meet the needs of girls. Resting means that we will suspend all activities and programs at that property and minimally maintain it following the closing ceremonies and open houses. Divesting means that we will begin to explore selling or other environmentally viable options to find future owners/caretakers who will be good stewards of the properties that have meant a great deal to our Girl Scouts in the past.

The work of the Long Range Property Planning Committee focused on remaining true to our mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place, and to providing personal growth and leadership development programs for girls of all ages, both now and in the future.
