What Is Journey World?
Journey World, Powered by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, is a magical place where girls engage in science, technology, engineering, math, and environmental issues through programs that inform, educate, and inspire their dreams for the future and the careers they pursue. Girls learn about different career options, personal finance skills, and how their roles as consumers and producers are important to our economy.
Journey World is a unique, state-of-the-art facility covering 20,000 square feet on two floors and offers adventures in two programs: “It’s Your Future – Dream It!” and “It’s Your Planet – Love It!”
It's Your Future - Dream It!
This floor encompasses a “mini-city” that has been customized to adopt and incorporate Chicago-land institutions and businesses. The facility offers a striking 360-degree view of Chicago itself. Every “business” uses computers and other digital equipment for a variety of activities as an integral part of their operations. It incorporates key economics, math, and social studies concepts in a simulation where students apply these concepts and learn life skills while taking on “real-life” business, technical, retail, financial, and civic careers. The students run all aspects of their very own city – from publishing the daily newspaper, running the production studio, distributing goods and services, or ensuring the health and well-being of its citizens. Every worker is paid twice and buys products and services from the other shops. In addition, each shop is required to pay off its bank loan with the money it receives for the goods and services it provides to the citizens of the city.
It's Your Planet - Love It!
The other Journey World experience – is a 10,000 square foot “Eco-Lab” in the center of Chicago where girls are transformed into young scientists. A crisis is coming to a crescendo in the wetlands. A flood has washed away surface soils and drastic erosion is occurring. Excited young scientists game-plan solutions to save the ecosystem. Experiences such as these are a key part of the new leadership experience at Journey World. As the girls go through a coordinated series of activities grouped around a theme, they may explore over 30 different scientific careers during their experience at Journey World. This dramatic environment realistically portrays four North American ecosystems: Cave, Forest, Prairie, and Lake (and coming soon – A Space and Atmospheric Lab), and challenges young scientists to work together to restore habitats within the facility and beyond to life-sustaining levels.
