Inaugural Cookie Classic Timed 5K Race, Walk and Expo!
On Sept. 8, 2012, thousands of girls and Girl Scout supporters celebrated the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting at the inaugural Cookie Classic 5K Race, Walk and Expo! Our 100th Birthday Bash with a Mission celebrated all that girls have accomplished in the last hundred years and focused on our mission ToGetHerThere as we begin the next century!
Thanks to the volunteers, staff, sponsors, vendors, families, friends, alumnae, performers, and community members who came out, this event really sent a message to our girls. The Cookie Classic was a birthday bash with a mission, and you turned out by the thousands to show girls that they have the support they need to succeed in the future. It is this kind of community support that is at the heart of ToGetHerThere.
Please take time to learn about the ToGetHerThere mission, take the pledge and explore our site to see the many ways this movement is taking shape in your community.
5K Run and Walk
From STEM to healthy living and more, girls and families participated in a wide range of activities throughout the day! Organizations from the Chicago area provided fun and interactive programming. Journey World showcased the great programs that await girls in our council’s very own program spaces, and Girl Scout staff highlighted science fun for the whole family. Girls also learned about Girl Scout history from our council historians, discussed the five essential life skills that they learn through fall product and cookie sales and more!
Live entertainment included the Buckinghams, Melinda Carroll, Dream Makers, Haley Reinhart and Savvy! Our entertainers took time to interact with Girl Scouts, backstage and onstage, and to learn about Girl Scouting’s mission. A Girl Scout flash mob danced to Melinda Carroll’s song “Ignite.” Our very own Girl Scouts took the stage as part of Melinda Carroll’s Girl Scout choir and as solo performers, showcasing their unique and bold talents!
At the end of the day, our council sealed the 100th anniversary time capsule to be opened in 25 years. The time capsule contained Girl Scout history, Girl Scouts’ wishes and predictions for the future, troops’ letters to their counterparts 25 years from now and more. Upon sealing it, our CEO Maria Wynne included her letter to the Girl Scouts of the future, describing the accomplishments of today and the progress she hopes to see in the future. The Cookie Classic was the day for our Girl Scouts and our community to celebrate and work together for progress!
