Workshop Descriptions

Onwards and Upwards
Young scientists will listen and engage in conversation with a representative from the Chicago Center of Green Technology. The girls will focus on forming scientific teams while they collaborate on creating eco-friendly habitats for animals using solar and wind technologies. After studying ecosystems between the earth and sky, they will present their findings in a scientist summit.

Dive In, Breathe Out
The girls will discover the importance of the water cycle and investigate how the quality of air affects the quality of water. By working in research teams, they will build their own water purification system to help resolve pollution. In a scientist summit, the research teams will present their approach to the resolution and their plan to put this into action.

Be Energy Savvy!
Young scientists will focus on investigating how the Earth transforms its own resources into non-renewable energy. They will also learn how we can convert energy from the sun and wind into forms of renewable energy. Working in small groups, the girls will conduct several eco-experiments to discover the effects of using renewable and non-renewable resources on the environment.  Using their findings, they will present their reasons for using renewable resources in an effort to conserve energy.

Beyond the Limits!
Get a glimpse of the universe beyond the Earth’s atmosphere!  This workshop will focus on exploring the sun, planets, and Oort cloud.  Come investigate the sun with a solar filter and a telescope to discover its dynamic surface.  Young scientists will work together to construct a scale model of the planets in addition to probing the Oort cloud and resident comets.

Money Management
Exchange City is training the financial wizards of tomorrow! Participants will learn the importance of personal financial management. During this workshop, Exchange City will open for business, requiring these young citizens to take out loans, set up checking accounts, and learn about good spending and saving habits.

Radio City
Exchange City is listening! Instead of waiting to become a Disc Jockey, become one TODAY! Discover the excitement of producing a radio show, creating and broadcasting advertisements, and keeping citizens up-to-date on current events. Participants will work together to write, produce, and deliver a live radio show. They will also compile a personal portfolio of their show.

Lights, Camera, Action!
Whether you prefer to be in front of or behind the camera, you will have the opportunity to explore all aspects of the limelight. Participants will write and conduct interviews and film, produce, and direct their own morning news program. After the workshop, we will screen the completed clips and present the final show to the group!

Extra! Extra!
Live the life of a busy reporter, working for the Exchange City Times. Citizens of Exchange City will learn how to write, print, and publish a newspaper. Teams will gather news, write stories, compose editorials, and create an advice column before they send their paper to print.
