Today’s girls enjoy science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They develop applications, explore solutions to environmental disasters and work together to develop prototypes that will revolutionize our future.
Still, this childhood enthusiasm fizzles by the time girls choose their career paths.
According to the Girl Scout Research Institute study Generation STEM, 81 percent of girls are interested in STEM, yet only 13 percent say it’s their first choice.
Girl Scouts of the USA’s ToGetHerThere movement is focused on promoting girl leadership and putting an end to the cycle of discouragement that girls face, especially when it affects their pursuit of STEM fields.
In order to succeed in STEM, girls must overcome poor self-perception, teacher biases and gender stereotypes among other hurdles. They cannot do it alone. They need role models, encouragement and support.
Learn more about what ToGetHerThere is doing to encourage girls in STEM on a national level, and consider donating your time and talents to girls in your community as a volunteer.
